WR Minister Joseph Nelson Addresses Media During Inspection
Last week, the Western Regional Security Council (REGSEC) took action against illegal miners. They sent Police and Military to the Bonsa River in Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality.
The operation lasted two hours. Security forces arrested three suspects: Joshua Boateng, 20; Joshua Kyere Ishmael, 24; and Godwin Bagbetor, 29.
The security forces destroyed all water pumping machines at mining sites. They also burned solar panels, gallons of diesel and petrol, and temporary sheds.
Regional Minister Joseph Nelson spoke to the media about the situation. He expressed regret over the pollution of the Bonsa River by illegal miners.
“It is sad to see a river as big as Bonsa reduced like this,” he said. “Today, they cannot process the water because it is heavily silted.”
Minister Nelson assured that operations would continue until illegal mining stops. He aims to restore the river banks and purify water bodies.
He explained that despite logistical challenges, protecting river bodies remains a priority. The pollution level has become severe enough for Ghana Water Company Limited to stop treating water from the river.
“We have reports of galamsey activities along the Bonsar River,” he stated. “This hampers Ghana Water Company’s ability to supply potable water.”
Nelson visited to assess the situation firsthand and confirmed his concerns. He acknowledged logistical challenges but emphasized their commitment to removing illegal miners.
He reiterated his dedication to working with stakeholders and security forces on this issue. “It requires commitment, and I am committed to decisively address this problem,” he concluded.
