The Western Regional Security Council (REGSEC) took action last week. They sent police and military personnel to remove illegal miners from the Bonsa River in Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality.
The operation lasted two hours. Security forces arrested three suspects: Joshua Boateng, 20, an excavator apprentice; Joshua Kyere Ishmael, 24, a washing bay operator at Bogoso; and Godwin Bagbetor, a 29-year-old taxi driver.
Security forces also destroyed equipment used by the miners. They set fire to water pumping machines, solar panels, gallons of diesel and petrol, and temporary sheds.
Regional Minister Joseph Nelson spoke to the media after the operation. He expressed regret over the pollution of the Bonsa River caused by illegal mining.
“It is sad to see such a large river reduced to this,” he said. “Today, they cannot process the water because it is heavily silted.”
Minister Nelson assured that operations would continue until illegal mining stops. He wants to restore the river banks and purify water bodies in the region.
He explained that despite logistical challenges, protecting river bodies remains a priority. The pollution level has become severe enough for Ghana Water Company Limited to stop treating water from the river.
“We have reports about galamsey activities along the Bonsa River,” he said. “These activities hinder Ghana Water Company’s ability to supply potable water.”
Nelson visited the site himself and confirmed his concerns about pollution. He acknowledged logistical challenges but emphasized their commitment to removing illegal miners.
“I am committed to working with stakeholders and security forces,” he stated. “We need dedication to tackle this issue decisively.”
