RTIC Demands Answers From FIC Over Withheld Tax Information

**Mr. Joseph Bediako**

The Right to Information Commission (RTIC) has requested a response from the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC). This request concerns the FIC's refusal to release information on tax evasion and money laundering cases.

Joseph Bediako, Convener of the Movement for Truth and Accountability, filed a petition. He accused the FIC of not providing requested details. Bediako first sought information in December 2024 and sent a reminder in January 2025.

After receiving no response, he escalated the issue to the RTIC. He requested information about investigations since 2020, including findings and relevant details.

Yaw Sarpong Boateng, Executive Secretary of RTIC, cited Sections 43(2)(b) and 70 of the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989). He directed the FIC to justify its refusal within seven days. The Commission emphasized that public institutions must assist in investigations.

They warned that failure to comply would not stop their review process. In another development, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) responded to Bediako’s request. They provided data on audits, penalties, and referrals to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

From 2021 to 2024, GRA audited 548 importers. This led to assessed liabilities exceeding GH¢1 billion. Additionally, they referred 537 cases to EOCO for further action.

The GRA introduced measures to prevent infractions. These include stricter post-clearance audits and improved coordination between regulatory bodies. They also enhanced monitoring of fund transfers.

The GRA outlined penalties for importers who under-declared customs values. The FIC’s response is still pending. The RTIC advised all parties against making prejudicial public statements during ongoing investigations.
