Former Kumbungu MP Ras Mubarak has raised concerns about a video. The video shows NDC Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi giving U.S. dollars to Patricia Asiedua, known as Agradaa.
Mubarak warned that such actions could harm public trust in the Ghanaian cedi. He believes this behavior shows a troubling disregard for the currency's stability.
He cautioned that forex giveaways by public figures can weaken the local economy. “Government officials should prioritize national interests,” Mubarak stated. “They cannot justify giving away foreign currency when the cedi is doing well.”
Mubarak noted that Ghana already faces dollarisation pressures in real estate and education. He said Gyamfi’s actions reflect poorly on leadership and may encourage using foreign currencies over the cedi.
“Sammy Gyamfi’s poor judgment suggests a lack of confidence in the cedi,” he added. This could negatively affect the cedi's value and stability.
Mubarak also urged the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to enforce gift tax laws. He asserted that Agradaa must pay tax on the dollar donation.
In response, Sammy Gyamfi apologized publicly for his actions. He called it an “error of judgment” and expressed regret for any embarrassment caused to supporters.
“This was meant as a kind gesture to help someone in need,” Gyamfi explained. He thought it would remain private and never expected it to go public.
While he insisted there were no political motives behind the donation, he acknowledged its unfortunate optics given the economic situation.
