Read Circuit Judge's account of incident leading to 'IGP reportedly orders detention of 4 police officers for arresting a Judge for a traffic offence'

Incident Involving Judge and Police Officers

Angela Attachie is a Circuit Court Judge at the Adenta Court Complex. She has shared her account of an incident involving four police officers. This incident led to the Inspector General of Police ordering their detention for arresting her over a traffic offense.

On April 7, 2025, Angela Attachie wrote to the Director of CID, Ghana Police Service. She described an unfortunate encounter with police officers on her way to work. Angela lives in Oyibi and works at the Adenta Court Complex.

On that day, she approached Rowi Junction but took a shorter route due to heavy traffic. About 100 meters from the turn, she switched lanes on the newly constructed road. A police vehicle was parked nearby when they signaled her to stop.

The officers informed her that she was under arrest. Angela asked why they were arresting her. They claimed she should have stayed in traffic until reaching the turn.

She explained that it was impossible due to heavy traffic and clear roads. Despite this, they insisted on arresting her. Angela then showed them her court identification and stated she had done nothing wrong.

The officers maintained their position, so she drove away slowly toward the court premises. The police followed her and blocked her car from moving further. One officer got out and used car tires to block her front wheels.

Another officer placed blocks behind her car's tires as well. Angela called for security from her court for assistance with her items. When they arrived, they greeted her respectfully as "my Lady."

Onlookers advised the police not to treat a judge this way, but they ignored them. Angela left the car and walked past gathered spectators into her office. She asked her clerk to take photos of the police vehicle for documentation.

Her clerk faced backlash for taking pictures and was arrested by the officers. He was beaten on his eye, stomach, and thigh before being taken to Adenta Police Station. He remained detained from around 8 AM until about 5 PM before his release.

The officers also towed Angela's official vehicle away from the court complex. It took intervention from the commander for it to be returned to her later.

Angela learned that these four officers were part of a special task force set up by former IGP George Akuffo Dampare. The team was led by Inspector Godwin Dey; other names are known by the Adenta Divisional Commander.

An investigator assigned to this case visited Angela's office for statements and evidence collection three months ago but has provided no updates since then.

Angela is now formally requesting an investigation into this matter for justice against those involved in harassment towards a judge like herself.

She expressed concern about ongoing disrespect from some police members who should protect judges like herself under law enforcement duties.
Angela wonders if gender or youth influences their behavior towards her.
If police can treat a judge poorly without reason, what happens to ordinary citizens?

She remains available for further questioning regarding this case.
