President John Dramani Mahama has launched a new Code of Conduct. This code applies to all political appointees. It aims to improve transparency, accountability, and ethical governance.
During the launch at the Presidency, President Mahama said, “This Code represents a bold declaration of the standards we must uphold as servants of the public.” He emphasized that it is an enforceable framework for appointees under his administration. He stated there will be no exceptions for anyone who violates these standards.
The code is based on core principles promoting a new political culture. These principles include serving the public with integrity and impartiality. Appointees must prioritize national interests over personal ones. They should avoid misusing office or state resources and declare any potential conflicts of interest.
Additionally, appointees are expected to avoid opulence and be accountable for public funds. They should demonstrate humility in service and respect for citizens.
Chief of Staff Julius Debrah warned that there will be no excuses for violations. He stressed that compliance with the Code is mandatory and breaches will not be tolerated.
Key points from the 66-page Code of Conduct include:
- Compulsory asset declaration
- No acquisition of state assets
- Zero tolerance for corruption and conflicts of interest
- Strict rules on gifts and hampers
- Transparency in travel and sponsorships
- Confidentiality regarding cabinet documents
- Workplace integrity and anti-harassment policies
- Collective cabinet responsibility
- No influence peddling or quid pro quo
