The Western North Regional Minister, Wilbert Petty Brentum, announced a 15% reduction in transport fares. He believes this will boost the economy. Lower transport costs will reduce prices of goods and services across all sectors.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, he explained the fare reduction. It is due to favorable microeconomic conditions. The cedi's continuous appreciation against the dollar has helped lower fuel prices.
Brentum stated that this fare reduction should improve food prices. Traders often include transportation costs in their pricing. He urged them to adjust their prices downward to reflect these changes.
He credited President John Dramani Mahama for fostering a better financial environment. This has allowed the cedi to strengthen against other currencies. These economic policies have positively impacted imported goods, especially fuel.
Finally, he called on the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other authorities. They need to take action against drivers who do not comply with these directives.
