The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has strong words for illegal miners. He referred to them as "terrorists" who threaten the lives of Ghanaians.
He stated, "We can't allow a few people to make money at our expense." He emphasized that these individuals are harming millions of Ghanaians.
During a press briefing on April 3, he highlighted the urgent need to stop illegal mining. This issue has serious environmental and social consequences in Ghana.
Buah expressed concern over polluted water systems. He noted that turbidity levels range from 5,000 to 12,000 when they should be 500. "It means we are drinking poison," he lamented.
The Minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to combat illegal mining. These activities have devastated forests, water bodies, and farmlands across the country.
He also mentioned that the government welcomes small-scale miners who follow proper procedures. "If anyone wants to do genuine small-scale mining, we will guide them," he said.
The Minister promised support in obtaining licenses and promoting responsible practices. He called for a united effort against illegal mining: "This must be a collective fight."
