Dennis Miracles Aboagye is the Director of Communications for the Bawumia 2024 campaign. He wants to scrap the Regional Ministry desks across Ghana. He calls them a political stumbling block. They undermine the autonomy and effectiveness of local assemblies.
On Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily, he spoke on May 21. He described regional ministries as sources of unnecessary interference. This distracts Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) from their work. It also impedes their ability to operate independently.
Aboagye stated that it is time to dismantle the regional ministry. He believes it prevents district assemblies from functioning properly. "The district is autonomous," he said. He questioned what a regional minister can do besides political persuasion.
He noted that by law, a Regional Minister's role is limited to supervision and coordination. However, in practice, their influence often exceeds these limits. This creates confusion and blurs lines of authority within local governance.
"When district assemblies make laws, the regional minister cannot unmake them," he added. He views this as a political bottleneck causing more confusion at the local level.
