Registrar-General Grace Ama Issahaque emphasized the importance of Intellectual Property (IP) for national development.
She spoke at a media briefing about Ghana's cultural identity. Since 2016, the government has launched initiatives to support IP. These efforts aim to empower creatives and innovators in Ghana.
Madam Issahaque highlighted Kente weaving as a unique cultural asset. Unlike textiles from Ivory Coast, Benin, and Togo, Ghana’s Kente has distinct patterns and historical significance.
To protect this uniqueness, the government uses geographical indications (GIs). This form of IP links products to their origin. It aims to strengthen the global brand of Ghanaian Kente and prevent imitation.
She also discussed new regulations for Kente production and marketing. These regulations will help business owners enhance product authenticity and competitiveness.
Additionally, Madam Issahaque mentioned ongoing public education programs. These programs raise awareness about IP rights and improve the visibility of Ghanaian-made Kente.
“These efforts protect heritage,” she said, “and create sustainable business opportunities.” They aim to benefit local communities and boost the national economy.
