Reinstate sacked TTH CEO – Andy Appiah-Kubi tells govt

Former MP Andy Appiah-Kubi is calling for Dr. Adam Atiku's reinstatement. Dr. Atiku was dismissed as CEO of the Tamale Teaching Hospital. This followed a surprise visit by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh on April 22.

The minister's visit was triggered by the death of a patient, Bavug Salim. Reports suggest this was due to a non-functional ventilator in the emergency unit. A video of a heated exchange between the minister and Dr. Valentine Akwulpwa went viral, sparking public debate.

In response, the Doctors Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH) suspended emergency and outpatient services indefinitely. However, these services resumed on April 25 after intervention from Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II.

In an interview with Selorm Adonoo on Channel One TV, Appiah-Kubi criticized the minister’s approach. He suggested that such matters should be handled privately.

He acknowledged that the minister showed concern but emphasized professionalism. "His response is commendable," he said, "but he needs to learn from this."

Appiah-Kubi felt that confronting health professionals publicly was inappropriate. He urged dialogue between the Ghana Medical Association and the Health Minister to resolve issues amicably.

"I think they should find a truce," he stated. He believes firing Dr. Atiku publicly was improper and unnecessary. "Let him return to his post and continue his work," he suggested.

Akandoh has expressed that he meant no disrespect to TTH doctors and hopes to end the strike soon.
