Reject petition to remove EC Chairperson, deputies — Think Tank

The Centre for Democracy and Socio-Economic Development (CDS) Africa has petitioned President John Dramani Mahama, urging him to reject calls for the removal of Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Jean Mensa and her deputies.

In a counter petition submitted on April 4, 2025, the think tank warns that dissolving the commission could set a harmful precedent, making the EC vulnerable to political interference with each new administration.

CDS Africa emphasized the importance of maintaining the independence of the EC to safeguard Ghana’s democratic stability.

They noted that the current petition to remove the EC officials draws from the politically motivated dismissal of 2017, which undermined public trust.

The think tank urges the President to prioritize the autonomy of the Electoral Commission for the greater good of Ghana’s democracy.
