The Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) has raised concerns about fake baby diapers in Ghana. Many of these diapers were rejected in their home countries due to safety issues.
Weak enforcement of regulations allows dishonest importers to sell these dangerous products. This poses serious health risks for infants. The warning follows a recent crackdown by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA).
The FDA confiscated and incinerated over one million substandard diapers. This action came after parents, especially mothers, complained about diaper-related rashes and infections.
Nana Prempeh Aduhene, Executive Director at the CPA, shared alarming findings on the Citi Breakfast Show. He stated that some diapers are rejected during production in their home countries.
These rejected diapers often end up in trash cans but are later repackaged for sale in Ghana. Aduhene explained that the CPA informed the FDA about this issue.
Initially, the FDA allowed importers to store these products in designated warehouses. However, they later shut down some facilities due to improper practices.
Aduhene emphasized that importing diapers is acceptable if they pass rigorous tests with the FDA and Ghana Standards Authority. He expressed surprise that banned diapers have entered the country.
Investigations suggest that China may be the source of these rejected products. The CPA commended the FDA for destroying over one million fake diapers.
