Relief as Agavedzi Sea Defence Project officially begins

Residents of Agavedzi, Salakope, and nearby coastal areas can finally feel relief.

The Government of Ghana has awarded Phase II of the Blekusu Sea Defence Project to Amandi Holdings Ltd. This marks the start of construction aimed at protecting lives and homes along the coast.

Volta Regional Minister James Gunu announced this news in a Facebook post. His announcement has generated excitement among affected communities.

He confirmed that Amandi is already on site. They are mobilizing equipment and setting up an operational base at Azizadzi for construction.

“I’m pleased to inform you that Phase II has officially been awarded to Amandi,” Mr. Gunu stated. He added that the company is preparing for full-scale construction works.

To support residents during this time, the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) has provided temporary shelters. These shelters allow people to move to higher ground for safety during construction.

Mr. Gunu also mentioned ongoing efforts for permanent housing solutions for those displaced by tidal waves. “We are working on a housing project for resettlement,” he said.

In addition to shelter, the government will continue providing food supplies and medical care. They emphasize their commitment to residents' well-being during this critical period.

News of the project's start has excited many along the coast. In Agavedzi and Salakope, residents see this as a turning point in their struggle against tidal waves.

Madam Yawo, a widow from Salakope who lost her home last year, expressed her joy: “We have waited too long for this. I thank God and the government.”

Mr. Mawuli from Agavedzi added: “The sea has been eating our land every year. If done well, we’ll have our lives back.”

Local leaders encourage residents to cooperate with authorities and contractors for smooth progress on the project.

Mr. Gunu thanked President John Dramani Mahama for his support of coastal protection efforts. “On behalf of Volta Region, I express my gratitude to H.E. John Dramani Mahama,” he said.

The Blekusu Sea Defence Project began during Mahama's administration as part of a strategy to protect vulnerable coastal communities from rising sea levels and climate disasters.

With Phase II now underway, there is optimism that it will provide lasting relief and improve living conditions for coastal dwellers.
