As Ghana observes a scaled-down 68th Independence anniversary, the nation commemorates the 1948 Crossroads Shooting at Nationalism Park today, February 28.
This historic event, which occurred nine years before independence, remains a key moment in Ghana’s nationalist struggle.
President Mahama, government officials, diplomats, and veterans will lay wreaths to honor fallen ex-servicemen who were shot while protesting unpaid benefits after World War II.
The tragic deaths of Sergeant Adjetey, Corporal Attipoe, and Private Odartey Lamptey sparked widespread unrest, leading to the detention of the UGCC’s “Big Six” and shaping Ghana’s independence movement.
The aftermath of the shooting fueled nationalist sentiment, ultimately culminating in the Gold Coast’s transformation into independent Ghana on March 6, 1957.
