Suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has criticized the Justice Pwamang Committee. She called their proceedings a “mockery of justice” and a “ruse” aimed at removing her from office.
In a supplementary affidavit to the Supreme Court, she alleges violations of her dignity and rights. She describes her treatment as inhumane and degrading. Torkornoo claims the process undermines her constitutional protections.
She also criticized the hearing venue, located in a high-security zone. Previous inquiries were held at the Judicial Service’s Court Complex. She finds the current setting inappropriate and intimidating.
Justice Torkornoo raised concerns about the committee's lack of transparency. They did not provide legal criteria for establishing a prima facie case against her. This makes it difficult for her to understand her rights and prepare a defense.
Despite informing the committee about her Supreme Court challenge, hearing dates were set without her knowledge. Her counsel was unavailable on those specified days. The affidavit disputes allowing petitioners to present evidence through witnesses instead of appearing in person.
Additionally, she claims that committee actions have caused her mental distress. These include denial of access to mobile phones and invasive body searches. Her husband and children were also refused entry into the hearing room.
In contrast, petitioners’ counsel had mobile phone access and received preferential treatment. She argues these measures are an attempt to apply psychological pressure on her.
