Election Watch Ghana, a non-partisan civil society organization, has petitioned the Minister of Defence to reassess the deployment of military personnel to the leadership of the Electoral Commission (EC).
The petition, submitted on February 14, 2025, argues that the assignment of over ten military personnel is excessive and inefficient, stressing that the resources could be better allocated.
The group highlights Ghana’s history of peaceful elections, where previous ECs operated effectively with police protection, and contends that military presence at Inter-Party Advisory Committee meetings has created an intimidating atmosphere.
Referencing international best practices and constitutional provisions, the petition calls for the replacement of military personnel with police officers to preserve democratic principles.
Copies were also sent to key security officials.
