John Darko, Legal Counsel for the Minority, has issued a warning. He cautioned against attempts to remove the Chief Justice. Such actions could harm Ghana’s constitutional democracy.
In an interview on Citi FM's Eyewitness News, Darko spoke about this issue. He stressed that the judiciary is the last independent institution in Ghana. He fears that removing the Chief Justice could lead to dangerous consequences.
Darko explained that political parties might misuse petitions for their own gain. "Every political party that wins elections will want to remove the Chief Justice," he stated. This could create a troubling pattern in Ghana's politics.
He pointed out Ghana’s stable judicial history under the 1992 Constitution. Past presidents have worked with Chief Justices appointed by their predecessors. For example, President Kufour worked with a CJ appointed by Rawlings.
When President John Evans Atta Mills took office, he continued this practice until retirement. Darko believes this tradition should be upheld to maintain stability in Ghana’s democracy. "We shouldn’t destabilise our constitutional democracy," he emphasized.
