Reopen Ghana’s Washington Embassy now – Patrick Boamah tells Ablakwa

Patrick Boamah, a member of Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, has urged Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa to reopen Ghana’s Embassy in Washington, D.C. The embassy is currently closed due to investigations into alleged corruption.

The closure followed a special audit that revealed a fraudulent scheme. The Ministry stated that this action is part of a broader restructuring effort. However, Boamah criticized the minister's decision as lacking diplomatic tact.

He warned that the closure could harm Ghana’s international reputation. Speaking to journalists in Accra on May 27, he said, “The mission ought to be reopened immediately for business to continue while investigations go on.”

Boamah emphasized that the minister has the power to address the allegations. He stated that Parliament supports efforts against corruption but stressed the importance of careful diplomacy.

He noted that the embassy's closure could impact bilateral and business relations. “If someone planned to meet with businesses or organizations in Ghana, their arrangements are now jeopardized,” he explained.

Boamah called on the Minister to reopen the Embassy and appoint appropriate interim staff. He added that after investigations, it may turn out none of the foreign service officers were involved in wrongdoing. This situation could unfairly damage their reputations.
