Report: Chairman Wontumi embarks on hunger strike in EOCO custody

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He has reportedly refused to eat since his arrest. This information comes from Frank Annoh-Dompreh, a Member of Parliament for Nsawam/Adoagyiri.

In an interview on Peace FM, Annoh-Dompreh stated that Wontumi is on a hunger strike. He said this is a protest while in custody at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Annoh-Dompreh expressed concern about Wontumi’s health status. He accused officials of not allowing access to Wontumi or providing medical updates.

“The doctors have been tight-lipped,” he said. “When we ask questions, they don’t provide helpful information.”

He added that Wontumi was taken to the BNI clinic for medical attention. However, details about his condition and treatment remain unclear.

“They are not allowing his lawyers or us to see him,” he noted. “Has he killed anyone?”

Wontumi was arrested by EOCO on Tuesday, May 27, 2025. This occurred after he met with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Accra. His arrest has sparked political debate over alleged targeting of opposition figures.

On Wednesday, May 28, he was granted bail of GH₵50 million with two sureties. As of Wednesday evening, his legal team had not met all bail requirements yet. Reports indicate one surety has been secured; another is still pending.

Former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong has offered to be one surety for Wontumi's release.

The situation has drawn criticism within NPP ranks. Concerns are rising about Wontumi’s health and efforts to secure his release.

The hunger strike and restricted access to his legal team have caused outrage among party members. This raises fresh questions about due process under the current administration.
