The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has advised commuters to report any driver charging unapproved fare increases to the nearest police station.
Speaking on Citi FM, Industrial Relations Officer Abass Imoro stressed that only the GPRTU and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have the mandate to negotiate and announce transport fare adjustments.
"Passengers should not pay any new fares imposed by drivers and must report such cases immediately. No transport operator has the authority to set their own fares, as this would exploit the public," he stated.
His comments follow the Alliance of Drivers Ghana’s unilateral announcement of a 20% fare increase due to rising fuel, engine oil, and spare parts costs.
In response, the Road Transport Operators have urged the public to disregard any unapproved fare adjustments, reaffirming that only the GPRTU and GRTCC can determine official transport fares.
