Resolve Ablekuma North results or risk undermining democracy – IGP to EC

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno has made an urgent request. He asked the Electoral Commission (EC) to outline a clear plan. This plan should address the long-delayed collation of parliamentary election results in Ablekuma North.

The IGP warned that further delays could harm Ghana’s democratic credibility. Ablekuma North is currently without a Member of Parliament. This situation has persisted for months after the 2024 general elections due to unresolved disputes.

Ahead of a meeting with the EC, Dr. Yohuno stressed the need for quick action. He wants to restore public confidence in the electoral process. “The EC must provide the National Election Security Taskforce with a roadmap,” he stated.

He described the situation as critical and emphasized its importance. The handling of this matter will affect perceptions of electoral integrity nationwide. “This is a pivotal moment,” he said, noting that it will set the tone for future elections.

Dr. Yohuno urged all parties involved to seek a peaceful resolution. “Let us secure not just ballot boxes but also belief in the system,” he added. He called for protection not only of lives but also of democracy itself.

Police are expected to provide security during the recollation in Ablekuma North.
