Respect Chairman Wontumi’s rights - Bawumia to EOCO, other security agencies

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has spoken out about Chairman Wontumi's arrest. He urged the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and security agencies to respect his rights. Wontumi, also known as Bernard Antwi Boasiako, was detained on May 27.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Dr. Bawumia expressed concern over Wontumi’s detention. He noted there are no clear charges or confirmed information about Wontumi's whereabouts.

“In a democratic environment, no individual is above the law,” he wrote. He emphasized that all Ghanaians should have their constitutional rights upheld. Justice and due process are essential for democracy.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted the public's growing interest in Wontumi’s case. He mentioned he is in contact with Wontumi’s legal team to ensure they pursue all legal options.

He praised the legal team for their professionalism and vigilance. Dr. Bawumia is actively monitoring the situation and expects lawful handling of the case.

He warned that if state institutions fail to act legally, it could damage public trust in Ghana’s justice system. “Ghana must always be governed by law—not arbitrary power,” he stated.

He reinforced his call for EOCO and related bodies to operate within constitutional limits. A strong Republic relies on fair and firm institutions, he concluded.
