Respect Supreme Court ruling on removal petitions – Amidu

Martin Amidu has criticized efforts to influence the removal of Ghana’s Chief Justice. He condemned the leaking and discussing of unverified petitions in public.

The former Special Prosecutor noted that the Supreme Court clarified Article 146 of the Constitution. This article states that details of removal petitions must remain confidential. This confidentiality lasts until a prima facie case is dismissed or a committee submits its report to the President.

Amidu emphasized that no one should disclose or comment on petition content during this process. He stated, “Whether it’s a Council of State member or an eminent citizen, using public platforms to influence the committee's work is unconstitutional.”

He urged all citizens to respect the Supreme Court’s interpretation. Actions undermining the integrity of this process should be avoided.

However, Amidu believes transparency is important after the committee completes its work. He said, “The public has every right to know the full content of the petition.” This includes understanding the committee’s findings and recommendations after presidential action.

He argued that only then can Ghanaians judge if justice was served.

Amidu also asserted that ultimate power lies with the people. He stated, “The electorate are a better appellate court than any unelected judges.” The Judiciary serves the people, not rules over them.

“Stop looking down on We-the-People,” he concluded. His message was directed at those trying to manipulate or obscure this constitutional process.
