Retailers dismiss reports of drop in cement prices

There has been buzz on social media about falling cement prices, especially for GHACEM 32R. However, retail checks show a different situation. Traders report that the recent rise of the Ghana cedi hasn't led to lower prices. Currently, GHACEM 32R sells for around 120 cedis per bag.

Despite the cedi's strong performance, expectations for lower prices are high. Traders in Accra have dismissed online claims about price drops. They say cement prices have remained steady or even increased slightly over the last two quarters.

As of February 2025, cement prices rose by 9 cedis to GHS 120. Retailer Atta Boafo stated, “There hasn’t been any price reduction.” He mentioned he ordered bags at 105 cedis but hasn't received them yet. Another retailer, David Nartey, confirmed that factory prices are still GHS 120 and he retails at GHS 130.

Traders cite high transport costs and rising input prices as reasons for stable pricing. Supply chain issues also contribute to this situation. One retailer noted that if clinker supply improves and exchange rates stabilize, prices might drop.

Most traders urge the government to address clinker shortages before any price reductions can occur.
