Revealed – FIC preparing its own docket against embattled Wontumi

Nelson Rockson Dafeamekpor, the majority chief whip, has made a statement. He revealed that the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) is building a case against Chairman Wontumi.

Wontumi is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP. Dafeamekpor noted that he may face multiple investigations for alleged offences. He mentioned this during an interview on JOY NEWS.

Dafeamekpor said, “I’m informed that FIC is preparing its own docket.” He added that it’s not unusual for suspects to be investigated for related offences.

Recently, news emerged that the FIC froze all of Wontumi’s accounts. This action follows Section 56(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020. The accounts frozen include those of Wontumi and his companies.

The Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, confirmed ongoing investigations into Wontumi. These include fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

Srem-Sai also stated there is an investigation into an international organized crime scheme involving Wontumi. The Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) is collaborating with international law enforcement on this matter.

Justice Srem-Sai explained that asset recovery efforts are underway to secure suspected proceeds of crime. In a post on X, he detailed various criminal offences under investigation against Wontumi.

He emphasized that these investigations run alongside asset recovery processes to prevent further loss of assets believed to be from crime.
