Revealed – Mahama’s car gift from a Ghanaian company and a Chinese firm

Felix Kwakye Ofosu is the Minister of State for Government Communications. He revealed who donated two cars to President John Dramani Mahama.

The cars were given by a Ghanaian company and a Chinese firm in Ghana. They were presented to support Ghana’s green energy initiative.

On Asempa FM, Felix Kwakye Ofosu explained that the cars are electric vehicles (EVs). These modern vehicles use batteries and some companies want to introduce them in Ghana. The donors hoped the president would promote green energy by using these cars.

He noted that companies believe prominent people can help promote their products. Daily, businesses approach leaders for this reason.

Kwakye Ofosu stated there are no laws against accepting gifts. However, if a gift exceeds GH¢20,000, it must be declared and given to the state pool. This rule exists in many democratic countries but with different thresholds.

He emphasized that President Mahama followed the law regarding the car gifts. The president has not used the cars yet but promoting local industries is beneficial for Ghana's economy.

Dr. Kojo Pumpuni Asante from CDD-Ghana disagreed with accepting such gifts. He believes high-profile gifts should be rejected outright by the president.

Asante warned that accepting these gifts could create conflicts of interest for the president.
