Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the NPP presidential candidate for 2024. He announced plans to elect the NPP's 2028 presidential candidate by January next year.
Bawumia noted that the NPP chose its 2024 candidate in November. This timing gave John Mahama an advantage, as he was already campaigning across the country. Bawumia mentioned that internal elections caused divisions within the party.
He explained, “We elected our presidential candidate a bit late.” By November, Mahama had already toured the country, which put them behind. The party faced challenges reconciling members after these elections.
Bawumia stated they are working on a proposal to complete all elections by January. This plan includes polling stations and flagbearers, allowing three years for preparation and reconciliation before 2028.
Currently, Dr. Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong are leading candidates for the NPP’s 2028 nomination. Bawumia received 118,210 votes (61.47%), while Agyapong got 71,996 votes (35.52%).
In related news, Boakye Kyerematen Agyarko criticized the NPP's current state. He said it has lost its soul, values, and principles over time. Agyarko believes the party has become fragmented due to narrow interests.
He emphasized that internal contests should unite members rather than create conflict. He urged a shift from control to empowering party members for growth.
Agyarko concluded that the NPP is at a critical crossroads and must return to its core principles.
