Revealed – ‘Mini micro’ minority plans to impeach President John Mahama

The Minority in Parliament is considering impeachment proceedings against President John Mahama.

The NPP accuses him of a serious constitutional breach. They claim this has left the country without an acting President.

According to the minority, Mahama violated the 1992 Constitution. This happened when he, the Vice President, and the Speaker were all abroad without an Acting President sworn in.

They noted that all three top officials were out of the country at once. Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman was in the UK for medical treatment. President Mahama attended the African Union Debt Conference in Togo. Speaker Alban Bagbin was also away.

With all three unavailable, Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo is on suspension and cannot step in.

In an interview with Joy News, MP John Darko stated that Ghanaians must fight against this act by the President. He pointed out that when Mahama left, the Speaker had already departed.

Darko said Mahama should have known his absence would create a vacuum and breach the Constitution. He criticized Mahama's attitude, saying it showed disregard for consequences.

He asked if they voted for a President to violate their Constitution. Darko emphasized they would invoke impeachment provisions if necessary.

Meanwhile, Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, Acting Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), rejected claims of a constitutional power vacuum in Ghana.

Tamakloe asserted that Ghana’s government is functioning properly with institutional continuity intact. He clarified there is an Acting Chief Justice currently serving.

He stated there are three branches of government: Judiciary, Executive, and Legislature. Tamakloe insisted there is no power vacuum as long as these offices are filled.
