Revealed – Over 5000 MTN Ghana customer’s data potentially breach

MTN has announced a potential data breach affecting over 5,700 customers in Ghana.

The MTN Group stated that the personal information of these customers may have been compromised. The Data Protection Commission (DPC) in Ghana is investigating the breach's extent and cause.

On April 28, 2025, MTN confirmed it is working with cybersecurity experts for a forensic investigation. They emphasized that protecting customer information is a top priority.

MTN will contact affected individuals once they have more clarity from the investigation. In the meantime, they advised customers to stay vigilant and provided safety tips.

Customers can place a fraud alert on their credit reports at major bureaus. They should keep their MTN, MoMo, and banking apps updated regularly. Using strong passwords and changing them often is also recommended.

Additionally, customers should be cautious of unexpected messages and avoid clicking suspicious links. Never share passwords, PINs, or OTPs via phone, text, or email.

In another incident, MobileMoney LTD (MoMo) addressed a complaint from a woman who reported unauthorized withdrawals totaling GH¢11,000 from her account on April 13, 2025.

She claimed that GH¢11,100 was withdrawn first, followed by an additional GH¢220. Despite contacting customer support for help, she received no positive feedback after being told to wait for 15 days.

MTN explained that this case involved social engineering where sensitive information was unknowingly shared by the user.
