President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to upgrade the Greater Accra Regional Hospital. This hospital is commonly known as Ridge Hospital. The upgrade will transform it into a full teaching hospital. This initiative aims to improve healthcare delivery in the region.
Mahama spoke during his Greater Accra 'Thank You Tour' on May 16. He highlighted the need for better healthcare services due to rising demand. "We aim to transform the quality outcomes for our healthcare," he said.
As part of this transformation, Phase Two of Ridge Hospital will be constructed. This expansion will increase its capacity and support its new role as a teaching facility. The upgraded hospital will also partner with the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons.
This partnership will enhance specialist training in the region. It will help reduce patient referrals to other regions or overseas, Mahama noted.
In addition to upgrading Ridge Hospital, Mahama plans to expand Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds. These expansions will occur in peri-urban areas like Bortianor, Kpone, and Shai Osudoku. The goal is to strengthen access to primary healthcare services in underserved communities.
Mahama also promised to improve living conditions for healthcare workers at CHPS compounds. He stated that all existing and new facilities would include accommodation for health workers stationed there.
