President John Dramani Mahama is worried about rising indiscipline in Senior High Schools (SHSs) across Ghana.
His concerns echo warnings from the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT). They have threatened action if the government does not address this issue by the end of the month.
During a meeting with Catholic Bishops on May 23, 2025, President Mahama emphasized the need for unity. He said there is a breakdown of values and morals in schools. This decline has led to serious incidents, including students bringing guns to school.
He mentioned a case where a student nearly lost her eyesight due to gunfire. The President questioned how education management handles moral instruction and teacher attendance.
He asked, “What do we do about our curriculum, moral education, discipline, and teacher absenteeism?” He noted that the inspectorate division of the GES cannot monitor all teachers at once.
Mr. Mahama called for better cooperation between the Ghana Education Service and religious institutions. He suggested collaboration with churches to ensure teachers are present and teaching in schools.
In another topic, President Mahama discussed illegal mining, known as galamsey. He described it as a complex issue worsened by economic hardship and youth unemployment.
He clarified that small-scale mining can be legal if properly regulated.
