Environmental group A Rocha Ghana has urged the government to abolish the River Guard initiative, arguing that it has been ineffective in combating illegal mining near water bodies and forests.
The call follows the launch of the ‘Blue Water Initiative’ by Lands and Natural Resources Minister Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah, which aims to restore polluted rivers under President Mahama’s environmental agenda.
Deputy National Director of A Rocha Ghana, Daryl Bosu, questioned the impact of the initiative, stating that past administrations have failed with similar strategies.
Instead, he urged the government to invest in empowering local communities to report illegal miners directly to enforcement agencies.
