Road tolls to be charged directly from MoMo wallets or bank accounts – Mahama hints

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans for road tolls.

He spoke at the 9th Ghana CEO Summit and Awards Expo. Mahama said drivers will not need to stop in traffic to pay. Instead, vehicles will connect to their owners' Ghana Cards. This will allow tolls to be collected via mobile money or bank accounts.

Mahama assured that the toll would be low, only 1 cedi. He explained that every car links to its owner's Ghana Card. Therefore, old toll booths are no longer necessary. When crossing the East Legon bridge, cameras will capture car images. The system will then send the toll charge directly to drivers.

Months ago, Mahama's government announced the return of road and bridge tolls. This move aims to generate revenue for road maintenance. The Ministry of Roads and Highways stated this initiative addresses funding challenges in road infrastructure.

The ministry is developing a modern toll collection system for efficiency. They aim for a smooth process using technology. To achieve this, they plan an open and fair procurement process.

The Ministry assures the public that this new system will solve current funding issues related to tolling and road maintenance.
