Road tolls in Ghana are set to return in a modernized, technology-driven format, eliminating the need for physical barriers, according to Roads and Highways Minister-designate Governs Kwame Agbodza.
Speaking during his vetting on January 20, Agbodza criticized the previous government's decision to cancel road tolls, calling it an "illegal" and poorly planned move that hurt revenue and road development. He argued the former system, while flawed, could have been improved instead of dismantled.
Agbodza revealed that the new system will focus on efficiency, reduce leakages, and ensure smoother traffic flow.
He emphasized that funds collected will directly support road infrastructure and address contractors' outstanding debts, which he said highlight financial mismanagement in the past.
