The Rotational Nurses and Midwives Association of Ghana has issued a strong ultimatum to the government. They demand immediate action regarding their delayed allowances.
At a press briefing on May 14 in Accra, National President Mr. Ebenezer Boateng expressed frustration. He described the situation as “systematic neglect” by the Ministry of Health. This neglect has left many rotational health workers unpaid for nearly a year.
“We’ve been working since May 2024 without financial clearance,” Mr. Boateng stated. “This deprives us of our rightful allowances.” He noted that these delays reflect ongoing neglect over four years, with little intervention from the Ministry of Health.
Mr. Boateng shared that this financial hardship has severely affected association members. Tragically, five rotational nurses and midwives have died during this time. Six others are suffering from chronic illnesses but cannot afford medical care due to lack of payment.
The association has given a one-week ultimatum, or 14 working days, to both ministries. They demand two things:
1. Immediate financial clearance for all rotational nurses and midwives.
2. Timely payment of accumulated allowances within 14 days after clearance.
Mr. Boateng warned that failure to comply could lead to further action. He emphasized that current conditions undermine their ability to provide quality healthcare services.
“Our members are essential to the health system,” he said. “The government must treat this urgently for our sake and for patients who rely on us.”
