The chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, Frank Davies, is disappointed with retired Supreme Court Justice William Atuguba. Justice Atuguba questioned the NPP's right to criticize the empaneling process at the Supreme Court.
Davies believes Justice Atuguba should stay quiet in retirement. He argues that public comments from Atuguba undermine the judiciary.
On JoyFM’s Top Story on May 7, Davies said Atuguba's words were unbecoming for a former Supreme Court justice. He expressed concern over Atuguba's language about the court being politicized.
Davies stated, “Justice Atuguba, don’t do this.” He criticized Atuguba for using terms like "rubbish" on radio. Despite holding him in high regard, he wishes Atuguba would stop these commentaries.
Davies' comments follow Justice Atuguba’s criticism of the NPP regarding Justice Gertrude Torkornoo's suspension. On JoyNews’ The Pulse, Atuguba dismissed the NPP’s response as "rubbish." He claimed their stance only serves to advance their narrative.
Recently, the Supreme Court ruled 3-2 against a case from MP Ekow Vincent Assafuah. This case challenged President Akufo-Addo’s decision to suspend Chief Justice Torkornoo over misconduct allegations.
Atuguba argued that if Torkornoo had made decisions favoring the NPP, they would not have complained about her suspension.
Davies accused Atuguba of showing political bias towards the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). He believes such remarks damage judges' credibility.
He emphasized that Justice Atuguba should stop undermining the judiciary with his comments. Regarding recent Supreme Court decisions, Davies rejected claims that Torkornoo engineered panels for specific outcomes.
He stated that accusations about unanimous decisions under Torkornoo are simply untrue.
