Rural communities suffer most from galamsey, but cause the least harm – Josephine Agbeko

Josephine Agbeko, Executive Director of Climate Voice Global, has raised concerns about illegal mining. She says it disproportionately affects rural communities. Those most harmed are not responsible for the damage.

Agbeko spoke at the JoyNews National Dialogue on May 8. She pointed out that rural populations contribute little to environmental harm. Yet, they face polluted water sources and damaged farmlands.

“Those impacted by these mining operations are not causing the harm,” she stated. “It’s our rural communities who are suffering the most.”

She criticized powerful interests profiting from destructive mining operations. They exploit Ghana’s natural resources without benefiting local communities or national development.

Madam Agbeko mentioned Legislative Instrument 2462, which allows regulated mining in forest reserves. She believes it worsens the crisis for vulnerable groups.

“The intersection of this L.I. and illegal mining raises questions about environmental stewardship,” she noted. “It also raises concerns about climate justice.”

She called for policy reforms that prioritize those at risk. Protecting Ghana’s natural resources for future generations is essential.
