SC dismisses applications against petition seeking to remove CJ

The Supreme Court (SC) dismissed two applications on Tuesday. The decision was made by a 3-2 majority.

The applications sought to stop President John Dramani Mahama from filing a petition. This petition was for the removal of the Chief Justice. The case will be forwarded to the Council of State.

Justices Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, Emmanuel Yoni Kulendi, and Amadu Issifu Tanko voted in favor of the Attorney-General's arguments. Justices Ernest Gaewu and Prof. Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu disagreed with this decision.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie announced that reasons for the ruling will be available by May 21, 2025.

When the case began, Mr. Godfred Yeboah Dame represented Mr. Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the plaintiff. He is also a Member of Parliament for Tafo in the Asante Region. Mr. Dame raised a preliminary legal objection about the panel's composition, which included Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as President.
