SHS food quality has improved – CHASS to Education Minister

The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) is surprised and disappointed. This follows remarks by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu about food quality in senior high schools.

The Minister expressed concerns over what he called “poor quality food.” He suggested the government might reverse its decision on food procurement. This decision allowed school heads to buy food directly, as promised in the NDC’s education policy.

This policy aims to improve quality and efficiency in the school feeding program. CHASS National Secretary Primus Baro responded to the Minister's statement. He said these comments were unexpected and had not been discussed with the Ministry or Ghana Education Service.

Baro stated, “We have not received reports of poor-quality food.” Feedback indicates improvements since headteachers began procuring food themselves.

He clarified that CHASS does not insist on maintaining control over procurement. However, they recommended this approach due to issues with the previous centralized model. These issues included delays and substandard supplies.

Baro mentioned they are open to any government decision. If centralized procurement returns, he expects timely delivery of food in proper quantities. He also urged that concerns about food quality be addressed internally, not through media statements.

On funding, Baro acknowledged some delays due to administrative changes. However, he confirmed that funds have been released, though some arrears remain unpaid.
