Minister Sam George has criticized the previous Akufo-Addo administration's SIM card registration. He called it an “abysmal failure.”
Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, he highlighted major flaws in the process. He noted the lack of proper verification measures. This issue has made it hard to link SIM cards to individuals.
George stated that attempts at SIM re-registration were unsuccessful. He mentioned security efforts to identify individuals linked to their SIMs. However, he found no proper verification was done.
He also pointed out that the previous administration ignored concerns about technology. Ghanaians faced unnecessary discomfort and long queues during registration. “It fell on deaf ears,” he said.
As a result, there has been an increase in SIM-related fraud. The country is back to "square one" regarding a credible user database. “We can’t identify who has a SIM,” he added.
George emphasized that they aim for a clean, technology-backed registration process. A new SIM card re-registration exercise will start in June 2025. This system will be fully online and designed to eliminate inefficiencies from before.
