The Director General of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Major (Rtd) Dr. Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon, has addressed recent claims. He rejected accusations that the demolition at the Sakumo Ramsar site was poorly coordinated. Dr. Kuyon insisted that the operation went smoothly and met its goals.
The demolition began on Tuesday, May 27. It is part of a government effort to reclaim protected wetlands from illegal developers. However, there were early setbacks during the operation. Lightweight machinery was unsuitable for the terrain, causing delays. A temporary fuel shortage also hindered progress.
These issues led to criticism from some observers. They questioned the planning and preparedness for the exercise. In an interview with Channel One Newsroom, Dr. Kuyon responded to these concerns. He stated that he found the start of the operation satisfactory.
Dr. Kuyon praised the collaboration between NADMO and partner agencies. He noted that each institution fulfilled its responsibilities effectively. “Everybody played their parts,” he said, assuring that targets were accomplished.
The Sakumo Ramsar site is a designated wetland reserve under international protocols. It faces increasing human encroachment and environmental degradation. Authorities say this demolition aims to restore ecological balance in protected zones.
Despite initial logistical challenges, NADMO remains committed to completing the operation. They promised improved support and resources in coming days for smoother execution.
