Salam Mustapha vows next NPP gov't will remove Chief Justice appointed by Mahama

Salam Mustapha is the National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He has issued a warning about Chief Justice appointments. Any Chief Justice appointed under President John Dramani Mahama could be removed by a future NPP government.

His warning comes after the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. Mustapha argues this suspension threatens the judiciary's independence. He spoke on Channel One TV on Saturday, May 3.

Mustapha criticized how the current administration handled the suspension. He called it a "crude" approach to governance. He suggested it was more about politics than legal processes.

He emphasized that politicizing the Chief Justice's office risks its independence. “You are making the office coterminous with the party in power,” he said. This could cause long-term damage to judicial independence.

Mustapha addressed host Umaru Sanda Amadu directly during his remarks. He promised reciprocal action if they proceed with the suspension. “If you go ahead with this, we will remove any CJ you appoint,” he stated confidently.
