Sam George: I’ll reduce Radio Stations to 100 if possible

Minister for Communications, Digital, Technology and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, has expressed concern over the excessive number of radio stations in Ghana, describing it as harmful to media growth.

Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV, he stated that the country currently has over 600 frequency authorizations — a situation he considers unsustainable.

“If you leave me, I’ll rationalize this and you’ll have less than a hundred radio stations,” he said, adding that such action could be misinterpreted as a crackdown on press freedom.

Sam George argued that many frequency holders lack proper content, running mostly syndicated political shows and recycled news. He stressed the need for stricter Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to ensure only serious broadcasters retain access to the airwaves.

He further revealed that 57 radio stations risk suspension for breaching broadcasting rules, urging compliance to improve media standards.
