Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George has criticized the sale of AirtelTigo for just one dollar. He called the deal "reckless" and noted its financial burden on Ghana.

The country now faces a debt exceeding 3.5 billion Ghana cedis. Much of this debt comes from acquiring and managing AirtelTigo.

Sam George mentioned a meeting with the American Ambassador. They discussed Ghana's debt to American Tower Company (ATC). ATC has presented a bill of 1.5 billion Ghana cedis.

He explained that AirtelTigo’s total debt continues to grow due to interest. "If someone bought AT for one dollar, who will pay the 3.5 billion cedis?" he asked.

George also criticized former Communications Minister Ursula Owusu and others involved in the deal. He accused them of being reckless in their actions.

Most of the debt was incurred by Millicom, an American company, and Airtel, an Indian company. After acquiring the company, they transferred its debts to Ghana's government balance sheet.

He condemned attempts to offload assets into a new entity. "This is a reckless move that shows a lack of responsibility," he stated.

Sam George emphasized the need for accountability in resolving this issue.

"The Attorney-General must act because we cannot run a country like this," he said. He stressed that past irresponsible decisions should not burden the government with debt.
