Minister Samuel Nartey George has urged Starlink to open an office in Accra. This request is a condition for the company to continue operating in Ghana.
Mr. George expressed concern about Starlink's lack of local presence. The company has regulatory approval to provide internet services in the country. He stated, “You can’t operate in our country and not have a presence here.”
He believes a local office would improve regulatory oversight and accountability. It would also better protect Ghanaian consumers.
Mr. George criticized the National Communications Authority (NCA). He called it a strategic oversight for granting Starlink a license without requiring a local base.
He highlighted that if issues arise, communication with Starlink takes too long. “We need to send an email to someone sitting somewhere in the US,” he said. This process can take two to three weeks.
He stressed that accessibility is crucial for effective regulation. A local office would allow for quicker resolutions of consumer issues.
“When I need to meet the CEO of any MNO, I can call,” he explained. This ensures timely consultations and protects the interests of Ghanaians.
Starlink, operated by SpaceX, provides satellite internet services worldwide, including parts of Africa. The service was officially launched in Ghana in August 2024 after receiving approval from the NCA.
Starlink uses over 5,800 low-Earth orbit satellites for high-speed internet access. Some users report download speeds exceeding 100 Mbps. The service aims to improve internet access in underserved rural communities where traditional infrastructure is lacking.
