Sam George denounces AirtelTigo sale, labels managers as 'enemies of the state'

The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has criticized the management of the AirtelTigo transaction. He called them “enemies of the state” due to the controversial sale.

The decision to sell AirtelTigo came after it accumulated a debt of GHC3.5 billion. The company was sold for just one dollar.

On Monday, March 24th, Mr. George spoke to journalists in Parliament. He questioned the patriotism of those involved in the sale. He argued that their actions left Ghana with a significant financial burden.

“Those who managed the AirtelTigo process are enemies of our state,” he stated. He mentioned that ATC (American Tower Company), one of AirtelTigo's creditors, presented a bill of 1.5 billion Ghana Cedis.

Mr. George also revealed discussions with officials from the American Embassy. They highlighted serious financial liabilities linked to AirtelTigo.

He explained that these discussions showed the company's outstanding debts were alarming. This situation raised concerns about who would repay these debts.

“The American Embassy was in my office,” he said. “One major issue raised was the indebtedness to ATC.” He noted that AirtelTigo's debt exceeds 3.5 billion Ghana Cedis.

He stressed that such financial commitments cannot be ignored. They will have serious implications for government finances.

Mr. George questioned why a heavily indebted company was sold for so little money. He urged Ghanaians to scrutinize this decision made by the previous administration.

“So if someone told you they bought it for one dollar,” he asked, “who will pay the 1.3 billion accumulating interest?”

The Minister reaffirmed his commitment to transparency and accountability in telecommunications. His ministry will review the AirtelTigo transaction thoroughly and prevent future mismanagement.
