Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Sam Nartey George, criticized Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin. This followed Afenyo-Markin's claim of being assaulted by a police officer during the "Save the Judiciary" demonstration on May 5, 2025.
In a Facebook post, Mr. George questioned Afenyo-Markin’s sincerity. He pointed out what he sees as irony and double standards. He referenced past criticism he faced over his own encounters with security operatives.
“The very people who said my words justified these attacks are now slapping a policeman doing his job?” he wrote. He added, “Hmmmm. This life is truly a cycle. We pray for long life and good health.”
Although Mr. George did not name Afenyo-Markin, his comments seem to directly respond to him. Afenyo-Markin described an alleged assault by a police constable at Parliament House during the peaceful demonstration.
Afenyo-Markin claimed that the officer struck him in the chest without provocation. This left him disoriented and short of breath. He has called for a full investigation into the incident.
He also accused some individuals and political actors of twisting the narrative. Sam George’s remarks have introduced political elements to this controversy. They raise questions about partisanship and accountability in law enforcement matters during public demonstrations.
