Samira Bawumia Literature Prize Calls for 2025 Entries
The Samira Bawumia Literature Prize is now accepting entries for 2025.
Submissions open on Thursday, May 15, 2025, and close on June 21, 2025.
Interested participants can submit their work at www.sehp.sbawumia.org.
This prize promotes African literature by African voices for young readers. It aims to build a strong literary culture that inspires curiosity and celebrates identity. Participants have the chance to become published authors through this initiative.
Selected entries will be compiled into an anthology, providing exposure for new writers.
Attractive prizes await top-performing writers. First place winners will receive laptops and GHS 5000.00 in cash. Second place winners will get GHS 3000.00, while third place winners will earn GHS 2000.00. Writers ranked from fourth to tenth will each receive GHS 1000.00.
All thirty shortlisted entries across categories will also be published in the anthology.

Accra, Ghana – Wednesday, May 14, 2025 – The Samira Empowerment and Humanitarian Project (SEHP) announces the call for entries for the third edition of the Samira Bawumia Literature Prize (SBLP). This biennial competition aims to nurture talented young Ghanaian writers.
The SBLP has already published two anthologies: “All Ghana a Stage” and “We Move: Ghanaian Dream in Motion.” This is a great opportunity to see your work in print.
For the 2025 edition, we invite submissions under the theme “Reimagine Africa’s Folktales for the Next Generation.” We seek original works that resonate with young readers aged nine and up.
Submissions should creatively explore themes such as:
- Retelling African myths and folktales.
- Celebrating traditional symbols.
- Inspiring environmental responsibility through storytelling.
- Creating African heroes as role models for youth.
Eligibility
The competition is open to Ghanaian citizens aged between 15 and 30 years.
Submission Guidelines
- Word Count: Entries must be between 1,000 and 1,500 words.
- Genres: Acceptable genres include Fiction, Non-fiction, and Poetry.
- Entry Limit: Each person may submit one entry; up to three poems count as one submission.
- Publication Status: Works must not be published before submission.
