Sammy Gyamfi gift saga: Mahama's response is a slap on the wrist - Prof Appiagyei-Atua

Associate Professor Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua from the University of Ghana School of Law criticized President John Mahama's response to a cash gifting controversy. He described the president's handling of the situation as "a slap on the wrist."

On JoyFM’s Top Story, he expressed disappointment with the president's decision. After Sammy Gyamfi, acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, apologized, Mahama declared the matter resolved. Prof Appiagyei-Atua believes this falls short of ethical standards.

He stated that more action was needed to uphold these standards. “I would have expected a suspension or a public apology,” he said. He also suggested that the president should make a statement to show seriousness about ethics.

The controversy began when a viral video showed Mr. Gyamfi giving dollars to social media personality Patricia Asieduaa, known as Mama Pat or Agradaa. Following public backlash, Gyamfi called his actions “an unfortunate act of indiscretion.”

He was summoned by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah after the incident. The Chief of Staff then formally cautioned Gyamfi for his actions.

Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu announced that no further disciplinary action would be taken. He stated that the Presidency considers the matter resolved with just an apology and caution.

However, Prof Appiagyei-Atua raised broader concerns about moral and social contracts in politics. He criticized what he sees as inconsistent political behavior across administrations. “This chameleon-like behaviour is something being played between NPP and NDC,” he added.
